How do we measure social impact?

Because of the scarce resources and capacity in healthcare, measuring impact is becoming increasingly important. There are various methods for gaining insight into the impact of a healthcare innovation. But if sustainable implementation of a healthcare innovation is the desire, the SROI method, or Social Return on Investment, is very appropriate.

The SROI method has an eye for economic and social costs and benefits, and therefore fits well with the "Quadruple Aim". This "Quadruple Aim" stands for striving for better treatment results, deflecting costs and increasing the job satisfaction of the (healthcare) professionals and the quality of life of the patient/client.

The SROI Method

The goal of the evidence-based SROI method is to demonstrate the social impact of a healthcare innovation by understanding, managing and communicating this impact in economic and social terms. The SROI method always starts with the creation of an impact map together with the stakeholders. After this first step, five more steps are taken to arrive at the outcome of the SROI method, the SROI ratio.

When to use.

The SROI method can be used at different times, both predictive and evaluative. The first option, also called Quick Scan, has a short lead time and can be used when applying for grants or (follow-up) funding of a healthcare innovation, while the second option is used to evaluate a healthcare innovation using retrospective data.

Besides drawing up SROIs for companies, RRD in collaboration with Vita Valley also gives care institutions and companies the opportunity to train employees in the use of this method by means of an internal master class. During this Masterclass SROI different themes are treated. Of course the drawing up of the SROI and the calculation of the SROI-ratio are central, but there is also attention for coalition building and how to introduce SROI to colleagues, managers and financing parties.

In this masterclass Social Return on Investment, we have been working according to the proven international SROI methodology since 2018. During this intensive multi-day masterclass you will make a cost/benefit analysis. With the help of background information, instructions, dialogues and simulations you will master the material. You will engage in a dialogue with internal and external stakeholders; an SROI is not a technical fill-in-the-blank exercise but a means of developing effective coalitions.
