INITIALS: optimizing INITIation of ventilation in ALS patients.

The aim of the INITIALS study is to predict which characteristics of patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) who use non-invasive ventilation (NIV) have a positive effect on maintaining quality of life. It is expected that this will help to make an informed decision about whether or not to start NIV prior to initiating treatment. In addition to this primary objective, the data collected also provides insight into, for example, the reasons why setting up NIV sometimes fails and how quality of life progresses in patients who have not (yet) started NIV. The study also evaluates how people with ALS and their carers experience the use of NIV.
