MIAS Active Assistive Devices
Innovation for an aging society
MIAS

Active assistive devices have the goal to stimulate elderly to stay physically active and to support their activities of daily living. Loss of function is often compensated by the current assistive devices which may lead to a more passive lifestyle and further loss of function.

The aim of the MIAS AAD project is to develop two assistive devices:

  1. A click on wheel system with a motor which suits on a wide range of manual wheelchairs. These wheels make it possible to switch between manual propulsion, propulsion with power assist (in different modes), and totally electrical propulsion with a joystick on the wheel. The aim of this product is to keep wheelchair dependent subject as active as possible and investigate the influence of the use of this wheelchair on upper extremity load.
  2. An active patient lift which stimulates the patient to stand up in a natural way and use their own power and equilibrium as much as possible. The end product should be an active lift which delivers only the assistance as needed.
