Press release: Twente is a European Reference Site for Healthy Ageing

.

Today, Günther Oettinger, European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society, awarded Twente the status of Reference Site for Health Ageing. The associated Award was presented in Brussels to Jan Binnenmars, executive councillor Twenterand, who is coordinating the project on behalf of the 14 municipalities in the Twente region.

During the three-day European Summit on Digital Innovation for Active & Healthy Ageing, 74 Reference Sites in Europe were awarded the status, including four other regions in the Netherlands. In the Twente region, the activities at the University of Twente, Roessingh Research and Development and Twentse Zorg Academie lie, among others, at the basis of the award.

Inspirational initiatives in the region within this theme are PERSSILAA and Langgezond.nl, which are currently being implemented at present in Enschede, Hengelo, Tubbergen and Twenterand. These initiatives focus on the development and implementation of technology-supported services that allow people to independently maintain their vitality. Examples include a health self-check that is regularly sent to people aged 65 years and over, people with a heightened risk of health complaints being invited for a more extensive check-up, and people being offered digital and non-digital prevention activities in the areas of exercise, nutrition or knowledge/memory. The Twentse Zorg Academie is the innovative learning, test and practice centre in the area of healthcare technology and applications focused on care at home. Together with healthcare and knowledge institutions, municipalities and companies, the Twentse Zorg Academie focuses on technology and applications that enable people to continue living independently at home. At the Academie, local residents and professionals can find information and see the healthcare technology in action, and companies can test their applications in practice.

Under the banner Vitaal Twente (‘Vigorous Twente’), knowledge and expertise from these and other parties in Twente are being brought together to advance the vitality of Twente residents.
